Making Christmas Shopping Fun!

fauhope pre christmas short breaks

We’ve definitely said goodbye to the warmth of summer and the autumn leaves are falling fast, carpeting Fauhope’s gardens in rich hues of orange and gold and keeping our gardener very busy. Time to turn our thoughts to Christmas!

Autumn & Winter at Fauhope
Scotland is a stunning all year round destination for everyone, but we think Autumn and Winter are particularly special times of year. Staying at Fauhope Country House, you can relax in surroundings of the beautiful house and gardens, admiring the everchanging view, snuggled down in comfy sofas in front of our toasty hot log fire, helping yourself to our freshly baked cakes with afternoon tea. For the more adventurous, the countryside of the Scottish Borders is perfect for outdoor activities – cycling, walking, fishing and golf. We know that Scotland can be renowned for it’s rain, but we share Billy Connolly’s outlook that “In Scotland, there is no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes…”, so pack some waterproofs, wellies and winter woolies and enjoy everything the Scottish Borders has to offer.

Combine your Christmas Shopping with a Visit to Festive Edinburgh
With Christmas fast approaching why not combine a short break at Fauhope Country House with a trip to Edinburgh to immerse yourself in the city’s impressive festive celebrations. From 17th November to the 6th of January, Edinburgh turns into a magical winter wonderland, an explosion of twinkling decorations, mouthwatering street food and drink, unique gifts, fun rides and spectacular shows.

You’ll find the Scottish Market at St Andrews Square, a Winter showcase of the best artisan crafts, food and drink that the country has to offer. St Andrews Square also has an ice rink, so if you want to glide around the Melville Monument, just get your skates on. The traditional European Market stretches the length of Princes Street Gardens and offers a unique shopping experience from jewellery to woodwork, children’s toys to chocolate and many more perfect Christmas stocking fillers. It’s also the best place to stop for a warming mug of glühwein and a tasty bratwurst or an indulgent hot chocolate!

If designer and high tech gear is more your thing, Multrees Walk (near St Andrews Square) is where you’ll pick up your luxury fashion brands and it’s also home to Scotland’s only Harvey Nichols store.

The festive markets in the city centre are a short walk away from Waverley Railway Station, making it an easy trip for Fauhope guests. You can either leave your car at Tweedbank Station, 5 minutes drive from Fauhope Country House or we can drop you off. A very scenic 50 minute train journey on the Borders Railway takes you directly into the city centre, where you can spend the day and early evening exploring Edinburgh, before making the return journey to Fauhope for a good night’s sleep!

Don’t forget there are also lots of local boutique shops in Melrose to browse and buy that unique gift for a loved one. The Borders has local artisan gin and beer producers, as well as talented artists and craft makers, so you’ll be spoiled for choice!
